    Thief-style birthday present (IMAGE HEAVY)

    Warning: Image heavy

My brother came up with a rather original idea for my birthday gift. He gave me a hand-made thieving set in a huge box. Here's the content:

    The address is:
Garrett, South Quarter District, The City

Inside, there is a chest with a scroll on it.

    It reads:
    Garrett,
Here are the lockpicks that you ordered from the Farkus Store. Old taffer even put some tools used to manufacture them, for a fair bargain of 100 pieces of loot, they oughta serve you well. Just keep yourself out of sight of them Hammerites or City watch patrols, untill you can break a lock with enough speed. They've been after you since you pulled that job at Bafford's.

    And happy birthday,
    you taffer!!
The chest itself has a title:
    FARKUS FUNCTIONALS
    weapons & thievery tools

The contents of the chest itself:
    - a "healing potion" (actually a 35% liquor)

    - lock-picking instructions (good God, what are they doing out there in Medicine university?)

    -some paperclips

-some more picking tools and an old credit card for opening unlocked doors

    - pliers, three keys and a lock

    All I can say is,
    thanks, you original taffer!

Love the "healing potion." But paperclips? Maybe Garrett could use some Post It Notes too.

Tsk! Have you never tried to pick a lock with a paper clip?

    Nice present, nice brother.

Well I can't think that anyone in my family would have the imagination to come up with something so relevant to my life. As it is, my daughter's the only one who doesn't think I'm some kind of freak. But then she's marvellous and takes after her mother.

Are they real lockpicks or are they paper clips that have been bent to resemble lockpicks? I'm not sure about the box of paperclips or the credit card but the rest of it is really cool. I like how the lockpick instructions have been made to look like they were written on an old parchment.

I'd love it if someone gave me something like this for my birthday

Paperclips can be used to pick small locks, like padlocks or latches or diaries, or locks that don't need much pressure to rotate. The television and movie industry has created countless and rarely believable scenes depicting the use of a paperclip or hairpin to escape a locked room.

The credit card as a locked-door opener is also based on real life and has been exaggerated in entertainment. Doors with exposed or smooth catches can almost be swiped open with a credit card. In some buildings here on campus, we've had metal plates bolted over doors to prevent just that.

I think these are just bent paperclips too. They're awesome nevertheless.
