mouse is floaty?

STALKER went on sale again (Steam) and since I hated fumbling with DVDs and no-dvd patches and official patches I went ahead and bought it.

But it's slightly different than I remember. Maybe Windows 7 is causing the changes, but my new game controls a bit differently than the old. Specifically, the mouse is kinda floaty. And by floaty I mean it feels as though it has some inertia—it moves a bit after I stop moving. I don't think it's a framerate issue—the game runs above 30fps most of the time, and even when I drop it down to 800x600 the mouse still lags—and I have a gaming mouse, so I doubt that's the problem. either.

I could live with the problem, it's not that bad, but if there's a fix I'd love to hear it. Could this just be an issue with mouse sensitivity settings? Or windows pointer settings? I'm never really sure how to balance the two. Curiously enough, the inventory mouse, which ALWAYS lagged on Vista and the Win7 RC, is fine now.

I've had this in other games. It's called mouse smoothing.

A quick google suggests that typing

cam_inert 0.7
cam_slide_inert 0.25

in the console would work.

Another thing to try is toggling vsync, playing around with the prerender frames setting for your graphics card, or installing Windows XP again.

I figured out what the problem was, thanks to this thread.

If you're suffering from wacky amounts of head-bob, try this:

1. Hit the tilde (~) key to bring down the console
2. Type "cam_inert" and hit enter to see what the current value is (in case you want to put it back)
3. Enter "cam_inert 0", and hit the tilde key to close the console

The headbob was really bugging me after I patched, so I poked around in the console until I figured how to turn it down -- mine somehow got set to 0.7 after I patched (not sure what it was before, but it seemed more extreme).

It seems to save the value once you've done it, so no need to do it again every time you play.

Setting it to 0.0 also seemed to make the response to mouse movements snappier, oddly enough.

For trippy fun, try cam_inert 0.99

Though I didn't mention it, I was, in fact, also suffering from unusual amounts of headbob. Turns out the trick is to enter this command into the console, rather than manually edit the user.ltx file. Previously I had I only tried the latter, and it didn't seem to have any effect in-game. Setting the cam_inert to 0.0 using the console solved both the headbob and mouse issues.
