Thread: T2 FM: The Seven Shades of Mercury (Hammerite Imperium #1) - 20 May 2009

When I woke up today I decided to give this FM another try for good. When I climbed into the Cathedral I noticed that the boring architecture seen in the beginning is gone. Actually, when I got inside, I started to enjoy the mission. The Cathedral is gorgeous, very well made.

Most definitely not a turkey, however, still too difficult.

I also searched Dean Bangor's office fruitlessly for an age, aaargh.

I was playing on Hard, and once you get your gear it becomes quite easy to complete as you can skip the silver and black zones completely, get the purple icon, and leg it. I'll have to have another go on Expert and explore more. Loved the music, although it seemed to stutter a bit when switching between them.

Wow, I can't believe it! I fell in love in this FM after I reached the chapel. Knowing the fact that I hated it yesterday... The only thing I can say is that obviously the mission looks poor only in the beginning

You need to find some equipment, keep exploring, up in the attic, at least on normal, there is some *stuff* up there. You'll run across Shivans stuff, you will get a Black Jack!

I was hoping you might change your mind after going in the cathedral, BT! I kind of figured based on your comments about the architecture that you may not have left the Academy area. It is rather boxy, but then... it's a school. And the gameplay only gets better the further you go in this mission, IMO. The red, silver and black are the most fun.

This may sound really corny, but, as I stood on the ledge, looking at the cathedral, in all its glory. It just warmed my heart, to see this old engine still cranking out beautiful FM's, all the work you guys do, it warms the soul.

Its like a faithful dog that keeps giving and loving us all, with what it can produce, (yeah sometimes we know we want to take the bone away when its been bad) lol.

You guys are the true guardians and keepers of dromed.

The red torch guards extremely camp "Oooohhh!" cracked me up every time.

Then you will be forgiven if you too bash on Thief 2 Gold, because it's cubical, lol!

Yes, really. Now I'm really in love with SSOM! I have a lot of places to explore, hide... beauty! Still wonder how it was possible to create such a huge building without breaking the low poly rule.

The line. I like books, such pretty colors.

    Finished! No secrets though

Finished on hard but could not find any secrets. I did find the switch behind the tombstone but it did not check off as a secret.
Weird feeling being called a 'white devil' by the purple team!

    Seven shades of awesome!

    That was........amazing!
This has gone straight to my favorite FMs list
I agree with BrokenArts, it's surprising what dromed can do, that was some HUGE areas that ran very smoothly even with the snow falling.
As high quality as a lot of FMs are there are very few of them that have that elusive 'authentically thiefy' ambience to them, Calendras Cistern to me felt like it simply WAS part of the thief world, and so did this, truly great job, well done to everyone involved.
Glad you changed you mind BT, I was beginning to think 'wha? are we playing the same mission here?'
So thanks HI team, I absolutely loved it.

p.s. theres one door I never opened, its in the academy at the bottom of some stairs, theres a notice board next to it and what sounds like machinery behind it, lockpicks don't work, wheres the key?

You get in another way. Look up just after you leave the blue/gold fight room.

In regards to the secrets - I'm certain that I had already found the second "non-general" secret. I had pulled that lever and nothing happened. Does one need to find the first related secret first?

Dayyyuuumm!!! Finished in 2hrs.20mins. on 'Legionnaire' and am wishing it could have lasted longer!!! I don't think I have the words to describe how beautiful and well created I feel this mission is! Absolute masterpiece!!! Thanks to all who had a hand in creating this one! Well done indeed!!!

P.S. The voice of the main character sounds very familiar.

P.P.S. I'm thinking of going back from my last save (just before I reached the White Team's home base) and checking out the Silver Team's Lair. I ended up down there accidentally while running away from a couple Red Team guys and got creamed by a Silver guy almost immediately upon entering his domain. Were there any added objectives that I missed regarding the Silver guys? Kind of hesitant because they seem pretty lethal, even though I have those newfangled mine things designed specifically to take out Silvers. Just wondering.

Dia: You get the extra objectives on Shadow difficulty. I recommend you try it.

I guess i am the only one special enough who couldn't find the golden team's guard that stole white team's icon.

Also, I'm quite unsure if i will know how to render the black (or silver? I think they're in the same place) team guards unconscious. I found some promising scrolls in the grand library (very beautiful btw), so i would be ok with a hint, not necessarely a spoiler.

Glad you finally got it running, ASHASSIN.

I suspect you may have missed at least one hallway on the upper level of the academy.

White team icon Check the rooms on the upper floor of the academy VERY carefully. Don't forget that there are doors off of the snowy balcony that lead to hallways with rooms.

Silver team There's a special way to deal with them as their armour makes them impervious to most conventional weapons. Again, check the same rooms mentioned above and you should find them.

I'm pretty sure i did all of the academy. The balconies aswell... well, i guess i'll just get every little silver bastard on me and throw an ice bomb... that should prove effective... though blocking the way aswell.

Edit: found the actual way to pwn silver team... seems like it's going to be a bit of a pain...

    Anyway...

Anyone having crash problems should, in addition to moving the EP thing elsewhere (temporarily), find all custom content -- be it custom bowsites, differently-colored air bubbles, Japanese health shields, what have you -- and move that/those elsewhere as well before installing the FM. (Also, getting rid of any weird remnants leftover from other FMs might help.)

For me, the culprit in most crashes (when dealing with the more ambitious FMs) has to do with such things and not the EP...usually. But I remove that anyway, just in case.

Okay, enough of that. Stellar mission, people. Exquisite. Once I got past the confusion of the setup (I'm easily confounded...for example, ask me about math and revel in my dull, cowlike stare!), it turned out to be a lot of fun.
WRITE MORE FM REVIEWS. God, you're probably my favorite reviewer on all of the interwebs and I haven't seen anything from you in years (by the way, are your old Hangar 16 reviews archived anywhere?).

Also I just recently finished it and will be posting my review in the "General FM discussion" thread shortly. Needless to say I thought it was a big steaming bowl of awesome. Only why did I never get a hammer??! You let me play as a HAMMERite and don't give me a hammer to dole out some heathen justice with (all these unbelievers aren't going to beat themselves to death, now are they)?! OH how you tease me...

That's been there on the thiefmissions page since the beginning.

    Thanks for the awesome mission!

I finished it on Legionnaire, but I actually managed to steal all icons and collected a little over 7000 loot!

I'll be sure to play the mission on Expert, or whatever the hardest mode is called. Good job! Personally I think it is worthy enough to be an actual level in the original Thief missions.
