Thread: I can't believe I still love SS1...

I bought A KVM switch so I can keep my old rig around just to play SS1. (Yes, I have SSP on my Vista box, but it never played or felt right.)

I've finished it at least 6 times, but this thread is going to make me play it again. In my opinion, it is tied as the best game in PC gaming history. (Alpha Centauri being the other.)

Well I just conquered System Shock I after what I would say is 3 or 4 years. This is probably the 7-10 time I have finished the game.

I beat it in 7 hours, 20 minutes which means had I done the hardest plot setting I would have failed

For some reason I kept running out of Medical Supplies until I reached the midpoint of Systems Engineering level.

Level 8 - Security remains my favorite level in this game, and Level 6 - Executive.

    Now onto System Shock 2

I have to say i've never tried on the timed difficulty setting yet....i was always afraid of failing. Maybe i should give it a go. Honestly though, it's just not me. Some of my favourite times during the game are staring out the windows!

it's like how old people can't move on to new modern music, instead they still listen to classical... some people just can't let go of the past and look into the future... there are heaps of games these days which are better than SS1...

No. It's like people who still enjoy and listen to a lot of modern music but can also appreciate classical music for how great it is. Which is a lot better than damning classical music because they hadn't yet invented the electric guitar.

Plus i have yet to find a recent game that captures cyberpunk better than SS1. This game is such a complete and polished experience with an unrivalled level of detail even for modern standards.

The comparison with classical music is absolutely apt.

Welllll, maybe a little hyperbole there.

I'd say you made a big understatement instead.

Do tell, I'm anxious to read the long list of games you think are better than SS1. May I remind you by the way that better looking != better.

    A message to D'Arcy:
F you, what give u the right to call me firstly a troll and then a girl?... without me responding in such a manner as this...

Btw, yeah there are heaps of good cyberpunk games. Like Deus Ex 1 and 2 (a #3 in the future) ... System shock 2...

  14. #39
We have the right to call anyone who uses "u" instead of "you" whatever we want.

I keep telling myself that I need to play System Shock 1 but continue to play System Shock 2. After 20+ play through s with System Shock 2 and here I go starting yet another round of System Shock 2.

With over 100 games on hand for PC, X Box, Play Station and an old Sega game system I always wander back to System Shock 2 after playing something else for a while.

Thanks to all for the Shock franchise and those whom are here that work to keep it alive and well. You have my gratitude.

I was wondering if that was going to happen.

For the record, I though he was a girl, too.

    Bingo.

It's because "moon" is considered to be feminine, in western culture at least.

And I tend to be of the opinion that, within the genre, System Shock 1 has yet to be surpassed.

  19. #44
Not just the moon, but "hope" and "light" are also seen as very feminine words. I've known at least one girl named Hope, too.

BioShock could have been that game...sadly, it fell short.

Been playing Age of Empires again?

  22. #47
    Wow...that's a little embarrassing.
Knowing that, it sounds a lot more like a guy, now.

Taught me everything I know about history...

That, and the fact that summoning leagues of cannon cars solves any conflict.

And monkeys. Can't forget about the monkeys.

I never played it but I had to localise the game's manuals. They have some pretty good stories hidden in there, like the one about the old priest who remembers his times of riding with Attila the Hun. That was better than many short stories I read. Most of it is rather well researched too, considering it's cultureless Americans who wrote it.
