Also putting a little distance between you and the mic will help, if your setup and situation will allow. A good, cheap pop filter is an old wire clothes hanger and some panty hose/tights/hosiery (depending upon which part of the world you reside). "Real" pop filters are relatively inexpensive and you can probably get one at a local music shop.

Fixing them "in the mix" isn't the best idea as some information is lost in the process and is unrecoverable. As SlyFoxx said, tame them to begin with and you'll be okay.

    Aloha, voice actor types!

Just in case some of you don't venture over to the Deus Ex section (gasp!), I figured I'd drop this link here. The Nameless Mod is currently in need of talented people such as yourselves :-)

    Did someone say voice acting?

Popping in to say hello, and maybe I can contribute?

    Experience
Three of Christine's SS2 Missions (which were a blast to do!):
    1. Ponterbee Station
    2. UNN Nightwalker
    3. Polaris (it was the working title - has this changed?)

Voice Acting is my desired profession, any experience is great.

    Type of voice
I'm a girl, with a very girly voice.
Well, not that girly. Feminine. Accents are available, as well, though I may need a little time for something more unfamiliar to me (Welsh, etc).
You need tavern wenches, female protagonists/antagonists, female guards, noblewomen, prostitutes, anything with an X chromosome, I'm your gal.

    Recordings
Christine or DinkSmallwood would have these, my copies of these files are archived on a CD from when I recently moved. I will have these available for download as soon as I get my paws on the files and know where to put them.

    Status
I'm available at any time. Send an email to me (it's in my profile) for all your girly girly voicework needs. I'm a student, and I am in the midst of summer courses, but I can get your file to you Friday-Sunday. I've got a standard headset/mic combo, but it does a decent job.

@ Yandros - If you contact me closer to the time of completion, I'll take a look. It should be fun. I can remember your name from a while back and, although I don't think I've worked with you before, I know you take pride in your work. I'm sure it'll be good!

Oh, and just for the record, Lizanneh is great to work with, and reliable too !

I am available. I travel and sometimes work strange hours, so it may be a few days before I answer a PM.

1: Experience: numerous voice acting jobs since April 2005:
Shadowhide's "When Angels and Devisl Dance" by , performing a thief
Getaene's "The Black Frog", performing the character "Gilles"
narration for an iPhone application; the job involved choosing music, sound editing and voice narration
Zontik's "King's Story," playing Earl Durkheim
strg8's "The Cabal," playing the town crier
Radio messages for half a dozen VegaStrike factions plus the Oswald Tutorial
Briefing video for Asgaroth's "The City Spreads Fever" including a Garret-ish narration
Fan mission by GORT, playing Pagan character "Hardroot"
Sterlino's "Abominable," playing Denlock and a guard
Briefing video with voice acting (not Garret) for Telliamed's "Last Carress," using the excellent artwork of Clockwork Mifune
Fan mission by Ottoj55, performing several characters
Nightshifter's "The Librarian," performing two thieves, two mages, Garret, and the drunk
    Random_Taffer's "Nostalgia," performing the Hammerite
SirBalu's "Chronicle of the Metal Age part 2" performing the innkeeper and other parts; I later expanded the innkeeper a bit into a small schema (61 lines)
Pixie's In These Enlightened Times,” performing the archeologist's ghost and The Curse
Fan mission by Schwaa, performing the shady shopkeeper/fence (this was fun to do, I really want to hear it in-game) and the singing drunk, later I made a small drunk voice schema (66 lines)
Pixie's "Under Templehill," performing the drunk
Demo, Hammer Chants. This schema (159 lines) includes singing/chants and was included in Yandros' Hammerite Mission Development KitThe_Dude's upcoming mission, performing an announcement with an embedded sound effect
Christine’s SS2 campaign "Ponterbee Station," performing log entries for Tomi, Shepard, and Carson
Moghedian's upcoming FM, performing Evan and the fastidious guard
Spitter's "Saints & Thieves,” performing Deryn

2: Type of voice. Male. I'm a calm person and keep my emotions under control in real life, so I do a good Keeper. I had an amusing disagreement with one author, who thought my keeper voice was not emotional enough . I enjoy singing. I have fun playing my drunk character. I'm told that I do a passable Garret, but nowhere near as good as Slyfoxx.

    3: Recordings. http://www.willadsenfamily.org/us/don/ttlg/voice.htm

4: Status. I remain available for voice acting. I got a USB condenser mike last year and it sounds great.

    5. Additional info: I do my own editing after recording, so I can give you game-ready files with Thief-compatible names and formats. If there is any doubt about what you want, I start with samples so you can choose the voice you prefer. I usually turn things around in a week for a conversation, or a few weeks for a bigger project.

Aside from the already-mentioned suggestion about waiting until the mission is close to release (much of my work over the last 3 years is still not released), I have one other suggestion. As the author, you have a vision of what the voices should sound like. If you know what you want, explain it clearly. If you don't know what you want, please tell the actor as much of your vision as you can. Let him ask questions, consider his suggestions and provide feedback on the samples. Some of my favorite voice acting projects were for authors who gave me some leeway -- sometimes they liked my ideas, sometimes not, but the result was always improved by the exchange. The one project I did not enjoy involved a lot of "I don't know what I want, but that isn't it," from the author.

Update Nov 2010: Updated the list of my work, and added URLs for authors and missions and such. And since you asked, this thread is working. Since I joined it, all but one of my Thief-related voice acting jobs have come from here.

    ...

Silver-ONI got caught up in life (and Oblivion work only to have technical issues...)

Well, here she is now, honestly saying she has no idea how well she'll be able to voice act with her new shiny Vista. I recently finished a huge part in Lost Spires, only to be turned down by technical issues, aka noise in background. If you do need me, I still have my old machine that I recorded on (which, if I find them, will repost them.) and if necessary, I will go to that if my recordings on this one is too noisy. It's Summer now, so I'm more than willing to help out again.

I am willing to give anything a shot (pagans, servants, ... really hope Viktoria is used in a mod so I can really give her a shot!)

Here's my example Thief-related stuff. If you want to here my more recent work as Norlene, though I will not be her in the final game, drop me a message.

    Glad to be back. Wow, it's been ages since I've been on here. O_o;;

I'll take such praise whenever I can get it! Don't know if I'd exactly call myself reliable, but if you think so, then FANTASTIC!

Silver-ONI: If I recall, the last time you were here, you were planning to make a complete female servant voice set. Did anything ever come of that?

I still think it would be good for authors to have more complete voice sets to choose from, without always having to ask for full voice sets from actors. If there was a library of voice actors with already existing voice sets, it would be fairly easy for someone to ask one of those characters to perform a few lines for their FM, keeping their voice consistent with the rest of the character without the need for a full voice set just for that FM.

I've been wanting to re-enact some Thief voices for quite a while now, but as you can probably imagine, I needed a time when I had the house to myself!

I have done Garrett, some guards, some Hammerites, Mechanists, servants, pagans, Trickster... and my favorite one of all, Raoul.

I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I did making them!

    * Hope the neighbors didn't hear me *

P.S. This topic was originally posted in the Thief General Discussion forum, but it was moved to here, and I was advised to re-post this entry here as some people thought that I may be good enough to do some mod work!?

The link for this thread has been added to the Custom Resources Guide.
Look for Custom Voices at the top of the thread.

Mentioning it there makes a sticky for this thread no longer neccessary. I expect people will be able to find it.

Experience: Haven't appeared any released mission yet. I've done voices (though nothing final) for Heart of Evil: Napalm Edition if that means anything to you.

Voice type: I consider my voice "neutral"; that is, not having a noticeable accent. I can simulate more than a few accents and voice types. How well I do if for you to judge.

I fancy I can voice most any kind of character. Admittedly, though, I rather enjoy playing antagonistic/villainous characters. But then again, who doesn't? I have a fairly large vocabulary, so talking fancy isn't a problem for me.

Availability: I'm free just about any time, though I usually get more done on the weekends.

Samples: I'll put something up soon...

EDIT: Here are a few old examples (except the song, that's a joke).

    Recently, I narrated a trailer for HOE:NE.

Thought I'd jump in here and say I'm available to do some acting as needed.

1: Experience: So far I have done a few lines of a crazy prisoner (great way to start one's acting. lol) for Eepcat in his 'Mystery at the St. Anne's Inn', and a line or two for Saturnine in his horror mission Rose Cottage.

Over all I am fairly new at the whole 'voice acting' thing. I am gaining experience (and confidence!) as I go.

2: Type of voice: Uh, no idea, actually. I am a woman, so obviously you don't want me for just any old guard - I doubt if I could sound like a man if I tried. I have been told - by men - that I have a really nice voice and they like listening to it. . .but I honestly don't know if they were in earnest or just flattering. (I'd like to think it was in earnest. . .they kept calling 'just to talk' and 'just to hear my voice'. so I don't know.) For my own self, I don't know how to judge. I've made complaints about how I sound but I am told thats not the way I sound to others, so it sort of leaves me unable to define my own voice. Helpful, aren't I? lol Probably could do most women characters, servants, nobles, pagans, mages. . .women guards, maybe? Although I'm not sure about villian(s. . villianesses?). I'm willing to at least try most anything. I'll probably get a better idea of what I can do as I go.

As far as accents. . .I am Canadian. I'd say I do not have an accent. I am not French and do not come from that side of the country, so I have a 'neutral' way of speaking as far as I can hear. (Although others from elsewhere might be able to tell you what a 'Canadian accent' is) I -might- be able to mimic British accents if I worked at it, but I can't tell you how authentic it'd be or if its just a really bad imitation picked up from the tv. I guess you'd have to be the judge of that.

3: Recordings: Um. None at this point, except Eepcat's mission. Not sure what to offer as samples.

4: Status: Available any time. Currently unemployed, so my time is, more or less, my own.

TEMPORARY EDIT: As of October 2011, my computer died and I am relegated to an extremely old, extremely underpowered laptop. I do have a portable drive set up that I'm running off of, but its not the optimal setup, even for an amateur. I will do some lines if you're in extreme need - but I can't guarantee quality at this point. I will re-edit this post when I've collected enough money for a new computer and am back up and running again.

I'd like to volunteer, even though I'm completely knew at this.

No past experience, unfortunately, but I might be good for a minor part until I gain some confidence.

    Voice type? I'm not really sure. There's a recording here --> http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122629
See for yourselves. I'm sorry about the quality and the popping sounds, I'll remedy that as soon as I'm able.

    Weekends are all good.

Well, I wouldn't mind if it generates more attention to this thread.
FM makers are welcome to post a message here when they need a voice actor, but so far nobody did .

The link is mentioned in the resources thread, at the top of the 1st page, but I seriously wonder if that's obvious enough.

    hey Phantom

I thinks it has been used as a place to find people to do lines - which is what I did today. A T3 Fm thats being made, needed a male and female voice actor and the first place I thought to find a someones to do the other lines was here.

Making a sticky thread for available voice actors sounds like a good idea, but why stop there? There could be a sticky thread for available betatesters, briefing video makers, spellcheckers/text editors, custom object makers, etc... In the end the forum would be full of sticky threads.

One sticky thread for all those (and more) might be a better idea, but perhaps that could go inside the custom resources thread too.

I think this is important enough to be stickied in its own right. I'm planning on using it to find voice actors by and by.

I think what we need is a single sticky with links to all the threads like this, so we don't end up with 10 stickies. Maybe the Guide to Custom Resources sticky could add links to valuable threads like this one?

Good suggestions Tomi and Yandros! I'm happy to put other links on top of the resources thread as well. Just as long as it's related to resources. Threads about available scripters, modellers, or even beta testers would fit this criteria
I'll be on the lookout for appropriate threads. Feel free to PM me when you know of one.

Right, now that this thread is dusted off, I hope a designer who's in need of lines will put his request here .

    Biker, thanks for the support!
