Getting rid of unwanted fog tip
If you set up fog in your mission and find it appearing in a roombrush which is not set up for fog then just using compile might not necessarily get rid of it. I got fog in a non-weather room brush three rooms away. This is what I did...
I first found the nearest true fog room and reduced its room brush fairly small, rebuilt the room database, selected the true fog room and clicked the compile button at the bottom centre while the room brush was still selected. Then entered the game in the room where the fog was not wanted and it had gone (if you have many fog rooms you might need to experiment with which one(s?) to alter and how much to reduce it.) Then I restored the size of the true fog roombrush, rebuilt the room database but did NOT compile. This way I got correct sound propogation, correct fog in the room I wanted, but not in the room where I didn't want it.
I made a note about exactly what sizes I changed and restored in case I need to redo it later for some other reason. Good job I did because I have had to redo it after reportalizing/optomizing. Bit of a kludge but it seems to work OK.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I found it when searching for a fog fix and it seems like the most obvious thread to post what I found. First of all, Fidcal, thanks for all your advice on the topic in this thread, and also in redleaf's thread which came a half a year later and which referenced back to this one.
Anyway, I've been struggling with fog leaking through solid into cells in an unfogged room which is nearby from the Top view, but only connected via air and roombrushes through a circuitous route to say the least. The unwanted fog was clearly along cell boundaries, as when I removed a couple of solid brushes to change the cell boundaries, the fog boundary also moved, but didn't piss off as I wanted. I tried adding both blocking and air brushes between the two rooms, but that didn't help.
The solution which has now worked for me was suggested by NV in redleaf's thread here - Telliamed's fogfix tool actually worked beautifully! It's a console app so you need to make a batch file (or run it from a Command prompt if you're not lazy), but in my case it removed all the unwanted fog. If it comes back later, I'll run it again and report back here if it works again or not. But I definitely wanted to recommend the fogfix tool to anyone struggling with this issue.

Update: Not unexpectedly I suppose, portalizing or optimizing again brings the unwanted fog back. So, it would seem running your mission through the tool is a step that should be done just prior to sending the mission out for testing or release.

Be careful with this tool!
Onу day I noticed that mission affected by this tool can't be saved anymore. When it becomes too complex, Fogfix completely spoiled it.
I suggest you to forget about fogfix until release. Then make backup and save it in a cool dry place, and only then use fogfix. You can also apply fogfix before self test or betatest, but never forget to make backup before.
Apart this nuance, the tool is invaluable and works perfect. What a pity that any optimisation disables its efect!

And a goat! Don't forget about the efficacy of a nice goat sacrifice. Some hold by chickens, but I say when your mission is at stake, go right to goat!!
Goat not withstanding (and goats rarely stand well after the sacrifice) I think Zontik's advice is excellent. It just doesn't go far enough. Generally, I say, if it is important enough to care about the phase of the moon, it's worth the extra surety that goat provides. I'm just saying.

Just solve first what you prefer to save: your mission or goat's life. Unfortunately they can't be saved both.

i wonder if fog is worth the effort anymore. video cards today don't seem to support the fog thief uses. i can't get fog on my computers.

With DDFix fog works fine. I went a year without it before DDFix came out, but have had it back for a few years now. It's definitely worth it I think.

Yep, I have Windows 7 64 bit quad core, ddfix and fog. It's great after so many years without it.
