    Official Dark Mod FAQ

    What is The Dark Mod?

The Dark Mod (TDM) is a total conversion of the Doom 3 engine to turn it into a Thief-like game. When you play a TDM mission, you feel like you're playing an advanced Thief game, even though it is running on the Doom 3 engine.

The Dark Mod was created over a five year period by a group of Thief fans, who wanted to recapture the spirit and gameplay of Thief 1/2 in a modern engine.

Visit our main webpage for more information, screenshots, etc.

    Is it a full game?

It's primarily a toolset, allowing fans to create their own missions in a medieval steampunk environment. When you download the mod, the only thing you can play immediately is the Training Mission. You have to download other missions separately.

There are already plenty of missions to play, however. As of this posting there are 14 fan missions ready for download, and more are on the way. This forum is just one place where you can find and download missions. You can also visit our Wiki page which lists all released missions.

What do I need in order to play?

Other than TDM itself, you must have a copy of Doom 3. TDM works with the steam version of Doom 3 if you can't find one locally. You must also have the most recent D3 patch. See our Download page for information on how to get and install TDM.

Is this the same thing as Thief?

The gameplay is very similar, yes. You'll find all your favourite tools (rope arrows, blackjacks, flashbombs), along with familiar gameplay elements like mantling, frobbing and shouldering bodies.

However, The Dark Mod takes place in a different setting. We make no references to any Thief trademarks or Eidos' intellectual property. The Dark Mod is not "Thief"--there is no Garrett, no Keepers, no Mechanists, etc. However, since both Thief and The Dark Mod are based on a steampunk version of our own history, there are plenty of similarities.

See here for information on The Dark Mod's setting.

What if I want to make a mission?

Our team has also created a specialized editor--Dark Radiant--to make creating fan missions much, much easier. Visit the main Dark Radiant page here: http://darkradiant.sourceforge.net/

    Is there an instruction manual?

We have an extensive wiki with lots of information for players and mappers. You may wish to start with instructions about TDM Gameplay. While many things will be familiar to Thief players, there are also new features, like lockpicking, rope swinging, and object manipulation that work differently.

Where do I get more information?

The Dark Mod has its own dedicated forum. You can also get information from our webpage or wiki.

Here's an updated promotional video that gives a good overview of what TDM is all about. Also includes a glimpse of the new vine arrows in action:
